Green data centre for Welsh council

November 4, 2010

Gwynedd Council has acquired one of the most energy efficient data centres in the UK, improving security and reducing running costs.

The new bespoke green data centre for the north-west Wales council has been designed using a combination of a free air cooling air conditioning system and cold aisle containment.

Ieuan Williams, ICT infrastructure and support manager for Gwynedd Council said: “Free air cooling, cold aisle enclosure and electronic UPS systems have reduced server room running costs and we now have a PUE (power usage effectiveness) rating of 1.28 which is very efficient.”

Air conditioning manufacturers’ data has suggested that the council could save up to 86 per cent on data centre running costs every year.

The new data centre is also to deliver better resilience.
